Measurement systems vary across the globe. While almost the entire world uses the Metric System (SI) — measuring in meters, kilograms, and Celsius — the United States and parts of the UK frequently use the Imperial / US Customary System — measuring in feet, pounds, and Fahrenheit.
Whether you are calculating international shipping weights, baking with a European recipe, or analyzing scientific data, knowing how to convert units accurately prevents costly mistakes.
Most Common Metric to Imperial Conversions
| Measurement | Metric Unit | Imperial Equivalent | Quick Formula |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 1 Meter (m) | 3.28084 Feet (ft) | Multiply meters by 3.281 |
| Length | 1 Kilometer (km) | 0.621371 Miles (mi) | Multiply km by 0.621 |
| Length | 1 Centimeter (cm) | 0.3937 Inches (in) | Divide cm by 2.54 |
| Weight / Mass | 1 Kilogram (kg) | 2.20462 Pounds (lbs) | Multiply kg by 2.205 |
| Weight / Mass | 1 Gram (g) | 0.03527 Ounces (oz) | Divide grams by 28.35 |
| Volume | 1 Liter (L) | 0.264172 Gallons (US) | Divide liters by 3.785 |
| Temperature | 0° Celsius (°C) | 32° Fahrenheit (°F) | (°C × 9/5) + 32 = °F |
| Temperature | 100° Celsius (°C) | 212° Fahrenheit (°F) | (°C × 9/5) + 32 = °F |
How Temperature Conversion Works
Unlike length and weight which start from zero, Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points:
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: Multiply by 9, divide by 5, then add 32. Formula:
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. - Fahrenheit to Celsius: Subtract 32, multiply by 5, then divide by 9. Formula:
°C = (°F - 32) × 5/9.
Quick mental approximation: Double the Celsius temperature and add 30 to get approximate Fahrenheit (e.g., 20°C × 2 = 40 + 30 = ~70°F; exact is 68°F).
Digital Storage Units: Decimal vs. Binary
In digital technology, storage units can be measured in powers of 10 (decimal / SI) or powers of 2 (binary / IEC):
- 1 Kilobyte (KB): 1,000 Bytes (or 1,024 Bytes in binary KiB)
- 1 Megabyte (MB): 1,000 KB (1,000,000 Bytes)
- 1 Gigabyte (GB): 1,000 MB (1,000,000,000 Bytes)
- 1 Terabyte (TB): 1,000 GB
